Seeing the Light

The truth is contained in the Bible - the Word of God - but it is not easy to discover or to understand.

As an American, I was educated to believe that man is essentially good and that education will bring men to happiness, prosperity, and peace. What Christians called “sin?I believed was ignorance—and curable. My desire was to help change society; religion seemed irrelevant.

Finished with school and working in the world, I found that my philosophy did not fit the facts. As a college English teacher, I had to help students understand literature that frequently made reference to the Old and New Testaments. I would research individual passages, but their deeper significance was elusive and the basic intention of the Bible a mystery.

How I thank the Lord that at the age of 38 I was introduced to the ministry of Watchman Nee and Witness Lee. They made the Bible so clear to me, not in a general way, but in every detail: God’s heart’s desire, man’s fall and redemption, man’s regeneration and growth in the divine life. The pieces of the Bible came together, and I began to experience Christ working His will in me, not by my efforts, but by His operation within.

I have been enjoying this ministry now for 36 years, realizing the truth of these lines from a wonderful hymn, “The Lord hath yet more light and truth/ To break forth from His Word.?(Hymns, 817)
